Guaranteed Issue Individual Health Insurance - A State-by-State Guide

In my previous post, I wrote about the 1996 HIPAA legislation and its requirement that states offer guaranteed-issue health insurance to all of its HIPAA-eligible residents.  I also mentioned that 40 states go far and above what HIPAA mandates.  These states offer forms of guaranteed issue individual health insurance (e.g. risk pools) to their medically uninsurable residents, regardless of the HIPAA requirements.state by state guide to individual health insurance

Health insurance sold on a guaranteed issue basis cannot reject applicants based on health or risk status. In a few states (e.g. New Jersey) all individual market insurers must guarantee issue all individual plans. In others states guaranteed issue requirements are much less restrictive.

I love how they put out press releases like this one, which is a nice hit job on the insurance industry, yet the White House solution is to effectively remove the one real choice consumers have that actually does provide some measure of cost competition. By opting out of insurance and saving their money, people would be free to negotiate with doctors and hospitals for cash payment, or to seek treatment overseas.

How do I get health insurance, if I have pre-existing conditions. I live in Arizona.

I'm a 44 yo male with a few pre existing conditions and I wonder if anyone knows if health history needs to be provided in states with guaranteed issue insurance and are the premiums much more expensive

Victor, what state are you in? You may be eligible for g-issue coverage in your current state.

It's been a while so I'll add Pa to the list. Rates are very affordable...typically under $300 per month.

Group medical health insurance is bought by your employer from a medical health insurance company. Everyone who is eligible can get coverage under the plan. Group medical health insurance is less expensive than individual medical health insurance, because you have the purchasing power of the group

Group health insurance plans can be up to 60% more expensive than individual health insurance plans due to pooling of all applicants, regardless of their current health status. Refer to the following blog post for group health insurance premium pricing statistics and trends: http://www.zanebenefits.com/bl...

Group is not cheaper, not by a long shot. That's the problem, and that's why it's dying.
